VALOR Stand Down supplies food, clothing more
A long line of veterans and others in need formed at the parking lot across from St. Luke’s Medical Building on Route 209 in Lansford Saturday morning.
VALOR Clinic hosted a Stand Down in the parking lot Saturday, one of several they hold throughout the year in the area.
During a Stand Down, VALOR gives free clothing, shoes, toiletries, food, and other items to veterans and others in need. And depending on the weather, they can get a lot of people in need.
“It varies,” said Mike Meining, coordinator of the Stand Downs. “Sometimes we get as few as 70; other times, we can get up to 400 people.”
VALOR primarily services veterans; but, for the Stand Down, they help those who show up.
“They have to provide ID; then, they sign in, and are escorted around, choosing what items they need,” Meining explained. “We keep an inventory of what they take.”
A volunteers escorts a person around to the various stations. There they have tables set up with boxes of women’s, men’s, and children’s clothing items. They could choose from pants, shirts, jeans, socks, underwear, along with sneakers, boots, and slippers.
“They have a lot of nice things here,” said Linda, who was picking up some items for her husband, a retired veteran, and herself. She chose several shirts, pants, and some sweaters.
There were also food bags specifically for the veterans.
VALOR Clinic provides Veterans with assistance accessing benefits, securing shelter, and providing long-lasting Post Traumatic Stress resources to Veterans through the Veterans Unstoppable program.
The next Stand Down will be held April 23 at the Lehighton American Legion Post 213 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
