A 43-year-old man from Frackville died in a crash at 2:59 p.m. Saturday on Route 61 in North Manheim Township.
State police at the Frackville barracks said the crash occurred near the Seven Stars Road in the township, where Matthew Williams was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said “several of the occupants” involved in the crash were transported to the hospital for injuries they sustained in the incident.
They said Williams was driving a 2017 Kia Rio and the sole occupant of that vehicle, which they attempted to stop for a traffic violation.
Williams fled the stop in his vehicle, traveled south on Rt. 61 and after approximately a quarter mile chase, the vehicle approached the intersection of Rt. 61 and the Cressona Mall entrance.
Police said Williams traveled into the right turning lane and “rear-ended” an SUV, causing a multi-vehicle crash.
The identities of the other people involved in the crash were not provided by police.
Williams’ vehicle came to rest in the northbound lanes of Rt. 61.
Police were assisted at the scene by Schuylkill Haven and Orwigsburg police, the Schuylkill Haven Fire Department, Pottsville Fire Police, Schuylkill EMS personnel and the county coroner’s office.
