Coroner IDs man who died in overdose at restaurant

The man who died following an episode at a Mahoning Township restaurant over the weekend has been identified.

Carbon County Coroner Mark K. Smith said that Juan Perez-Reyes, 43, was pronounced dead at 5:41 p.m. Sunday.

Smith said that on Saturday, the Carbon County Coroner’s Office was called to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Carbon Campus, for a death in the emergency room.

He said Perez-Reyes was transported to the hospital after being stricken at Pizza Como.

Smith said an autopsy was completed Monday morning at Lehigh Valley Hospital Cedar Crest. The results of the autopsy are pending further toxicological testing; therefore, the cause and manner of death will be pending results of those tests.

While earlier reports indicated the death is a result of an overdose, indicators on scene as well as at the hospital point in that direction, the official cause and manner of this death will be made upon the remainder of tests being finalized, he said.

Smith said this case remains open and along with the Coroners Office is being investigated by the Carbon County District Attorneys Office, The Pennsylvania State Police, Lehighton barracks and the Mahoning Township Police Department.

At 6:15 p.m. Saturday, the Pennsylvania State Police Lehighton barracks received a request from the Carbon County District Attorney’s Office to assume the lead in an investigation into an overdose incident where two male employees overdosed while working at Pizza Como USA, located at 1241 Blakeslee Blvd. Drive East, in Mahoning Township.

Mahoning Township Police Officers initially responded to the business where they learned that the two victims were found unresponsive by their fellow coworkers.

Both males were transported by ambulance to Lehigh Valley Hospital — Carbon Campus where one man was pronounced deceased.

PSP Lehighton Criminal Investigation Unit Troopers Daniel K. Magarelli and Ryan D. English responded to the scene and met with Mahoning Township Officers, County Detectives and District Attorney Michael Greek.

Troopers processed the scene and conducted interviews.

This investigation is ongoing, in conjunction with the Carbon County District Attorney’s Office.

Updated information will be released as to not jeopardize the integrity of the investigation.
