Weatherly student wins contest for ‘Cool Cop’ patch
A Weatherly Area fifth grader saw his artwork transformed into a police patch that will be worn by school resource officers.
Tucker Gilbert designed the winning “Cool Cop” police patch, depicting a smiling, blue ice cube with policeman’s cap, and received his own patch and a $100 gift card for his efforts.
Weatherly Sgt. Michael Bogart said the Weatherly Police Officers Association received about 100 submissions – all of which were creative and innovative, making it hard to choose just one.
Officers, after much discussion and voting, narrowed down the choices to five, and then voted again. Gilbert’s winning design made the cut by one vote, and voting almost ended in a tie when it came to the finalists, Bogart said.
“I wish we could have had more patches made,” he said.
The “Cool Cop” patch is available for sale on the Weatherly Police Department’s website, and money raised by the non-profit police association goes toward community events, such as National Night Out and Shop with a Cop during the Christmas holidays.
The association also did a Halloween patch contest in the fall, and hopes to do more contests with Weatherly Area students in the future, giving others a chance to showcase their talent, Bogart said.
