Tamaqua delays project
Tamaqua Area School Board decided to take more time with a project to erect a storage building and new concession stand at the stadium.
The board discussed options last week during committee meetings, when an alternate plan for a scaled back pole building was presented.
The original plan involved putting up a 120-foot by 50-foot pole building to store and maintain vehicles and equipment, and tearing down the football concession stand and relocating the concession in a different area.
The board sought bids for the two new buildings, but the bids for the 46-foot by 14-foot concession stand came in higher than anticipated, and the board decided to rebid the project.
The administration presented a different plan this month, changing the size and location of the pole building and not moving the football concession stand.
Superintendent Ray Kinder said the district could take the building from 120 to 90 feet, and turn it 90 degrees, and not need to relocate the concession stand, and then rebidding the building that way.
The board, however, raised concerns about how accessible the building would be and the reduced footprint, asking for site plans or drawings to see how the project would look.
The board members didn’t want to make a quick decision that the district would have to live with for the next 30 years.
The district could move forward with the original and do its own site preparation for the concession stand, which should save money, but it would extend the project, possibly two years, Kinder said.
Board members were more comfortable taking time with the project, rather than moving ahead with something that might not be best for the district in the long run.
