Lenten service
St. Matthew’s ECC, Kunkletown, will worship at its sister church this last Wednesday in Lent at Living Hope Light House, at 705 Third Street, Palmerton, at 7 p.m.
Maundy Thursday
• St. Matthew’s ECC, Kunkletown, will have the church open from noon-3 p.m. for prayer and will hold a Maundy Thursday service at 7 p.m.
• Effort UMC is holding its Holy Thursday service at 7 p.m., following the soup and bread supper at 5:30 p.m.
• Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Brodheadsville, will hold a Lord’s Supper Mass at 7 p.m.
Spring recess
The Pleasant Valley School District will be on spring recess through April 21.
Good Friday
• Middlecreek Christian, Kresgeville, will hold its Good Friday service at 7 p.m.
• St. John’s Lutheran Church, Effort, is holding its Good Friday service at 3 p.m.
• St. Matthew’s EEC Church, Kunkletown, will have the church open for prayer at noon and at 3 p.m.
• Effort UMC will hold its Good Friday service at 7 p.m.
Senior centers closed
All Monroe County Senior Centers will be closed this Friday. That includes the West End Center, meeting at Zion Lutheran in Brodheadsville.
Holy Saturday
Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Brodheadsville, will celebrate a Tenebrae service at 9 a.m.
At 1 p.m., there will be a basket blessing, followed by an Easter egg hunt at 2 p.m.
Stations of the Cross will be celebrated by the Spanish-speaking congregation at Our Lady Queen of Peace at 5:30 p.m., and at 8 p.m., the church’s Great Easter Vigil begins.
And at 7 p.m. there will be a Lord’s Supper Mass and Adoration, following until 11 p.m.
Easter service
McMichaels UMC will hold its Easter service at 9 a.m. Easter Sunday. It will include the celebration of Holy Communion.
Nature walk set
Salem-St. Paul Lutheran Church, Kresgeville, has a 1 p.m. Nature Walk on the calendar for Saturday at Kemmerer Park in Jim Thorpe.
The rain date is April 26.
Music show
American Legion Post 927 invites all members and guests to enjoy the music of Liquid Snake from 6-8 p.m. Saturday.
Meal orders due
Salem-St. Paul Lutheran Church, Kresgeville, is holding a turkey takeout dinner on May 3, from 4-5:30 p.m.
The platter includes: turkey with gravy, filling, carrots, applesauce, roll and either molasses cake or apple cake.
Orders must be placed by calling: 570-688-5381 no later than April 20.
The church is also taking orders for celery seed dressing, by the quart or pint. Call the church for costs.
Items needed
The Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network has the following needs:
Food Pantry: cereal, peanut butter and jelly, canned chicken/tuna, pasta and pasta sauce.
Clothing Closet: deodorant, cleaning products, blankets, comforters, towels and sheets and Easter basket fillers.
Diaper pantry: baby food and formula, adult pull-up diapers, bladder protection pads and bed protector pads.
Easter events
• The children of St. Matthew’s ECC, Kunkletown, will present an Easter skit during Sunday’s worship.
• Effort UMC will hold three services on Easter Sunday: at 7, 8:30 and 11 a.m. The latter two include receiving new members.
Pocono Women
Wesley Hall, Effort UMC, will host Pocono Women’s Group at 7 p.m. Monday.
Senior luncheon
Our Lady Queen of Peace Church will hold its monthly senior luncheon at 1 p.m. Monday.
The West End Mission dinner is set for 4:30 p.m. April 24.
OES meeting
Monroe Chapter No. 99 Order of the Eastern Star will hold its meeting at 7 p.m., at the Rimrock Masonic Center, April 23.
The meeting will include the regular order of business and the election of officers, followed by a social time.
SFRC open
Effort UMC’s Supplemental Food Resource Center is open on April 26.
It is requesting donations of cereals, oatmeal, cream of wheat, etc.
Old Tyme sale
The Pocono Old Tyme Farm Equipment’s Consignment sale will be held at the West End Fairgrounds in Gilbert on April 26, starting at 9 a.m. The auction sale, a part of the event, will begin at 9 a.m.

Community event
Health and safety is the topic for a free community event at the American Legion Post 927 in Gilbert from 1-5 p.m. April 26, with a rain date of May 3.
Food will be available for purchase.
The day offers live entertainment, home and personal safety, fire safety, children’s events and free demonstrations.
Chicken barbecue
Effort UMC will hold a chicken barbecue dinner in Wesley Hall from 3-6:30 p.m. April 26. The dinner includes: a half-chicken for adults (quarter-chicken for children), plus baked potato, corn, applesauce or coleslaw, roll and dessert.

Polk history

QV annual dinner
The annual Quiet Valley membership dinner will be held May 4, beginning at 1:30 p.m.

Real ID ahead
Rep. Jack Rader reminds all that as of May 7, federal law will require everyone to present a federally accepted form of identification to board a commercial domestic flight or visit a secure federal building that requires ID at the door.
Federally accepted forms of identification include a Pennsylvania REAL ID driver’s license or ID card, a U.S. passport or passport card, or a military ID.
Birding the Bog
Monroe County Conservation District’s Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center will host Birding the Bog programs on May 7 and May 14 beginning at 7 a.m.
