Woman loses $189K in sweepstakes scam

An 83-year-old woman from Emmaus is out $189,725 in an incident state police at the Fogelsville barracks have labeled a “theft/bad checks” case.

Police said the woman reported the theft/fraud scam at 12:06 p.m. March 27.

A resident of Spruce Road, Upper Milford Township, she told police she was advised she won millions of dollars over five years ago and was instructed to pay the taxes on the winnings in order to receive her money.

She said she never received the winnings and lost the money she paid.
