Police plan holiday enforcement detail

State police at Troop M, Bethlehem (Northampton and Bucks counties), have announced its annual Easter holiday enforcement detail will begin at 12:01 a.m. Friday and continue until 11:59 p.m. Sunday.

During the safety initiative Pennsylvania Aggressive Driving Enforcement Education Program) troopers will be targeting drivers who aggressively operate their vehicles in a manner which is dangerous to the public, which includes speeding, seat belt violations a child seat infractions.

Troopers will be concentrating their efforts on distracting drivers who text while driving, use a handheld mobile telephone, use hearing impairment devices or text-based communications and who are careless or reckless in operating their vehicles.

In addition, STEADD (Selective Traffic Enforcement Against Drunk Drivers) and Expert) troopers will specifically focus on apprehending motorists who operate their vehicles while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

During the Easter holiday enforcement period of 2024, troopers investigated 31 crashes in which 10 persons were injured. One of the crashed was alcohol-related.

In enforcement matters last year, police made 21 DUI arrests, and issued 186 speeding citations, five child passenger seat citations, 14 seat belt citations and 899 other citations.

They also issued 20 warnings for seat belt violations and made 27 criminal arrests that were self-initiated.

Police said a DUI checkpoint will be conducted by officers within Northampton County and sobriety checkpoints will also be held whereby officers systematically stop vehicles at selected locations to briefly observe drivers for articulable facts and/or behaviors normally associated with alcohol and drug impairment.
