The Lehighton American Legion post home will host a Cards For Soldiers event May 3 from 1 to 4 p.m., sponsored by its auxiliary unit.
One project includes volunteers signing Christmas and Happy Birthday cards that will be sent to two Veterans Affairs medical centers in Wilkes-Barre and Spring City.
Every veteran in these facilities will receive a Christmas card in December, and they also received a birthday card on their breakfast tray on the day of their birthday.
Another project includes assembling all-occasion card kits that are sent out to military bases, hospitals, commissaries, etc. for deployed military to obtain blank, all-occasion cards and envelopes for them to send home to loved ones.
Military bases may not have a Walmart, Hallmark or Dollar Store nearby to purchase cards to send home, and all military personnel get these cards for free.
Cards For Soldiers is a Grayling, Michigan-based, nonprofit organization founded by Charly Matthews, an Air Force veteran who began her work when her husband was actively serving overseas.
Judy Desrosiers, an ALA member from Weatherly, Post 360, who has been working with her local unit on this project invited Lehighton post to join them.
Volunteers are asked to join in this project and help put a smile on the face of a veteran or a deployed military member. Light refreshments will be available.
Those planning to attend, should call 570-401-4666 or 610-704-6523 no later than Saturday to ensure there are enough cards and supplies for everyone.
For information call Desrosiers at 570-427-8342 or 570-657-5254.
