East Penn Rec hosts egg hunt, plans fishing derby
It was Palm Sunday and the second day of Passover.
The weather was dry and sunny — perfect for the East Penn Township Ashfield Playground Recreation Board’s annual Community Egg Hunt, which began at 2 p.m.
Sixty-eight children participated, divided into four age groups ranging from 1 to 12 years old. Each group took turns — at 15-minute intervals — dashing across the playground in search of plastic eggs.
Just like that, the event was over, but the fun lingered. Organizers were pleased with the turnout, as was the Easter Bunny, who made a special appearance and handed out a basketful of candy.
The Recreation Board is set to meet to finalize details for its next event: the Armed Forces Day Community Youth Fishing Derby, scheduled for May 17 at Ashfield Playland on Lizard Creek.
The board is led by President Bernard Hosier and Vice President John Greenawald — who also played the Easter Bunny at Sunday’s event.
Assistant Treasurer Tammy Hosier and Township Manager/Treasurer Jillian Sterling, who officially serves as the board’s treasurer, round out the leadership, along with Township Supervisor Dennis Pearson, who serves as secretary.
The upcoming fishing derby will kick off with a flag-raising ceremony led by Lehighton American Legion Post 314, followed by a military gun salute and a historical preview of the 250th anniversary of a 1776 event that took place in what was then Northampton County — now divided into Northampton, Lehigh, and Carbon counties.
