PPL receives 2025 Power Player Resilience Award
PPL Electric Utilities has received the 2025 Smart Electric Power Alliance Power Player Resilience Award for its innovative use of predictive failure technology to enhance public safety, improve reliability and boost operational efficiency.
The SEPA Power Player Awards recognize organizations driving the transition to a clean, resilient and modern energy future.
PPL Electric was honored for its successful deployment of IND Technology’s Early Fault Detection system — a predictive failure technology that identifies deteriorating electrical components before they cause outages or safety hazards.
“Our commitment to safety, reliability and innovation is at the core of everything we do,” said PPL Electric Utilities President Christine Martin. “This award reflects the forward-thinking solutions we’re implementing to deliver safer, more reliable service while optimizing efficiency.”
The EFD technology uses radio frequency sensors to continuously monitor power lines and detect abnormal signals caused by aging equipment, vegetation interference and other potential failure points.
That allows PPL Electric to address issues proactively — reducing service interruptions and improving safety for customers and utility workers.
Since launching the system, PPL Electric has uncovered hundreds of hidden infrastructure issues, preventing outages and enhancing reliability for hundreds of thousands of customers.
The technology also helps crews perform targeted repairs before emergencies arise, reducing costly unplanned work and strengthening grid resilience.
By the end of 2028, PPL Electric plans to install more than 9,000 RF sensors across 8,000 miles of distribution lines in eastern and central Pennsylvania. The expansion is expected to deliver significant operational savings while further improving safety and service.
