Milling, paving scheduled for Lehigh Tunnel this month

The Pennsylvania Turnpike advises motorists traveling on the Northeast Extension (Interstate 476) to be prepared for single lane patterns and bi-directional traffic in the Lehigh Tunnels, beginning Sunday between milepost A70.2 and A71.9.

Motorists should expect delays, especially during the peak hours from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m., and seek alternate routes, where possible.

Starting Sunday, turnpike crews will close the northbound tunnel beginning at 8 p.m. through Wednesday at 6 a.m. One-lane of traffic in each direction will flow through the southbound tunnel during this time.

The reverse is planned for after the Easter holiday weekend, pending weather.

Starting Sunday, turnpike crews will close the southbound tunnel beginning at 8 p.m. through April 30 at 6 a.m. One-lane of traffic in each direction will flow through the northbound tunnel during this time

The restrictions are necessary to allow crews to safely perform milling of roadway and placing new pavement inside the tunnels.

Traffic will flow normally in both tunnels outside those days and hours.

Motorists should stay alert when approaching and entering the tunnels. Drivers are urged to turn on headlights, remain in their lane, follow posted speed limits and keep an adequate following distance from the vehicle ahead.

Anyone who experiences car trouble and cannot safely exit the tunnels, should stay in their car, put on their hazard lights, dial *11 via mobile phone and wait for assistance.
