I applaud Rep. Mackenzie’s efforts to keep our communities safe from fentanyl. But let’s not stop at the border. The opioid crisis is fundamentally a health care crisis. Too many Americans turn to drugs because they don’t have access to proper medical care to treat their physical and mental conditions, because they can’t afford it. Rather than increasing funding for ICE, let’s increase funding for programs that really help the most vulnerable members of out society, like Medicaid.
