West Penn Township police truck in service

West Penn Township police officers are behind the wheel of a new truck.

The purchase and financing of the truck, a 2024 Chevrolet Silverado, were approved by township supervisors in March.

And at Monday’s meeting, supervisors approved a resolution to lease the vehicle through Mauch Chunk Trust Company at an amount of no more than $62,015.

The vehicle was put into service recently, according to township Supervisor Jim Akins, who read the department’s March activities report.

In the report, Chief Jason Lorah thanked supervisors, township secretary Katie Orlick and treasurer Karen Wittig for the time they spent conversing with the bank and car dealerships.

The department outfitted the truck on its own, Akins noted.

“They took a lot of the equipment off the old vehicle and upfitted the new vehicle with it on their own and on their own time,” Akins said.

The department’s work saved the township thousands of dollars.

The vehicle will replace a 2019 model that has a bad transmission and high mileage.

After supervisors accepted the police report, Lorah again thanked township officials.

“Ladies and gentlemen, if you’ve been here for the last couple meetings you know that we were working on getting this truck,” he said. “The board of supervisors and Karen and Katie were phenomenal. They were absolutely great working with us.”

Lorah noted that the D.A.R.E. graduation will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday and the D.A.R.E. Challenge is at 10 a.m. Saturday at the West Penn Elementary School. He invited the supervisors to attend.

“The more people representing West Penn Township, the better,” he said.
