On the hook

Despite some light rain, the opening day of the fishing season brought several children to the Germantown Grove Club in East Jim Thorpe on Saturday.

Every year, the club hosts a children’s day for the first day of the season.

“This is especially for the kids, so they don’t have to deal with the crowds,” Kimberly Sargent, club member and coordinator explained.

The day’s activities were sponsored by the Goldberg Family, Lefflers Gas Station, Jim Thorpe Market, Thrivent, Whippin Waters, and Kristin & Derick.

On May 8 and 9, the club will hold the 70th Annual Special Needs Fishing Derby from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. both days.

The event is open to special needs children aged 5 to 20 and their caretakers.

Volunteers are needed to help with fishing poles, bait, and preparing the caught fish.
