Music delivering message of hope when it’s needed

Many of you probably don’t realize it, but there is a revolution happening in the music world.

While there will always be rap, hip-hop, pop and other popular genres cranking out No. 1 hits, there is one genre that seems to have been gaining in popularity at a time where this world needs it the most.

Over the last year, a group of men and women have stepped into the light to sing about their journey with the Lord and change the way that some of us see music. It’s astounding to see because up until Jelly Roll hit the world with “Save Me” I was beginning to think that hope in music being influential was a lost cause.

But since he kicked in the doors to show the struggles of life paired with finding God in the darkness, my family has also been finding light in the music that is starting to become mainstream.

We find our kids singing Megan Woods’ “Truth,” or Brandon Lake and Jelly Roll’s collaboration “Hard Fought Hallelujah” and it is refreshing to hear.

These artists are channeling their life stories and bearing more of their soul and struggles so that we may learn to live fuller, happier lives because we are not alone in the struggles we face.

Megan said in an interview that “Truth” was written from her deepest struggles.

“I believe we all go through times where we feel unworthy or unaccepted or unloved. This song is about the truth of what God says about us and how God views us. Once we know that truth, it allows us to walk in freedom.”

Another artist, Ben Fuller, has hit the lowest of lows, fighting his demons in a battle with drugs, alcohol and death before finally standing before the Lord and asking for his help.

I recently watched a concert from Fuller that was performed in the prison yard of California’s San Quentin and it was moving as I realized this man has found a deeper connection with God in a short time than some who have practiced their faith all their life.

In the clip posted on social media, Fuller spoke about how the Lord saved and changed his life, mentioning how, for more than a decade, he was an addict, but because of the power, love and forgiveness of Jesus Christ, he is no longer that person.

He explained that a family friend invited him to church and the rest was history, leading him down a path of sobriety and sharing God’s word with the world through his songs.

“And as a man that lived as a secret drug addict for 14 and a half years, I stood in that aisle way, and I felt the spirit of God,” Fuller said. “Romans 10:9 says, ‘If you believe in your heart and confess with your mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior, and God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. And I did just that, standing there in the aisle just by myself. I gave my full heart over to the Lord, and I said, ‘Fix it! You do it because I can’t!’ ”

Many of us may not face the struggles against drugs or prison time, but these men and women are helping to spread the word that while we may struggle, the greater power of God is always there, looking to guide us if we let him.

It’s a lesson we need more than ever right now, in a world that seems upside down.
