Fundraisers set for JT family affected by fire

Several fundraisers have been planned for a Jim Thorpe family who lost their home and everything in it during a fire Wednesday morning.

The Penn-Kidder Campus Parents posted on Facebook that a schoolwide Dress Down Day would be held today to raise funds for a Jim Thorpe High School senior and her family.

“The family lost everything and would greatly appreciate the community’s support through monetary donations,” the post states.

The post states that donations aren’t mandatory, but that if they are able and would like to contribute, to send the funds to the school in a marked envelope indicating the dress-down day.

In addition, a Basket Raffle & Bake Sale will be held for the family from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 3 at the Jim Thorpe High School for the Duffy family.

All proceeds from the event will benefit the Duffy family as they recover from this tragedy.

Anyone with questions or who would like to make donations may contact Amanda at 570-413-3855.

A GoFundMe has been organized by Melissa Feller of Jim Thorpe, who said her friend Tina Duffy lost her home and everything in it during the fire.

Feller said both of Duffy’s sons were not home at the time of the fire, but one of her cats perished in the blaze. The other is still missing.

As of 8:30 a.m. Friday, $5,390 of the $9,000 goal had been raised.

The fire at 514 Center Ave. occurred around 9 a.m. and when crews arrived on-scene, there was heavy fire coming out the rear of the first floor extending into the second floor and into the attic.

Fire Chief Vince Yaich said the homeowner was at home at the time and smelled smoke, went out toward the kitchen, and when she opened the door, the fire quickly took off.

Yaich said there were no injuries.

The home had heavy fire damage to all three floors in the rear, while the rest of the residence received smoke and water damage.

Yaich said that he doesn’t believe the fire to be suspicious, the cause is undetermined, and added he was waiting on a state police fire marshal.
