Long ball lifts Tribe past Olympians

Lehighton’s softball team smashed three home runs and three doubles in a 19-8 Colonial League win over Jim Thorpe on Wednesday.

Scoring in every inning, the Indians trailed after the first but took the lead in the second and never looked back in what became a mercy-rule victory.

Freshman Sophia Wise led the power surge, belting a grand slam in the third inning, and a two-run homer in the sixth. Batting from the No. 9 spot in the lineup, Wise finished 3-for-4 with seven RBIs.

“We’ve seen Sophia’s power in practice,” Lehighton coach Taylor Cashner said. “She’s been in a bit of a slump, so to help her get her confidence back, we dropped her down in the lineup — and today, that worked great. Not only did she show her power, but she also turned over the lineup from the ninth spot.”

Wise wasn’t the only Indian to go deep with the bases loaded. In the sixth, cleanup hitter Brynn Mriss blasted a grand slam to extend Lehighton’s lead to 13.

Lehighton scored in the top of the first on an error, a walk and two wild pitches, but Jim Thorpe answered with a three-run bottom half. Madison Schwartz led off with a hustle double to left, followed by a Hannah Zacharias single to center. Schwartz scored on a throwing error, while Zacharias advanced to second. After Mara Levins singled to put runners on the corners, Ryah Confer plated Zacharias with an infield groundout. Gloria Strohl then ripped a double over the center fielder’s head to bring in Levins.

Lehighton regained the lead for good in the second, capitalizing on three walks, a two-RBI single from Amber Yeakel, and a wild pitch.

“We’ve been leaving too many runners on base, but today we were able to string some clutch hits together,” Cashner said.

The Indians broke the game open with five-run frames in both the fourth and sixth innings. In the sixth, Kennedy Quinn scored ahead of Wise’s home run, while Morgan Myers, Yeakel and Eryn Mertz all crossed the plate before Mriss’ grand slam.

Jim Thorpe managed to put up runs in every inning except the second. In the third, Confer walked and later scored on Strohl’s second double of the game, a line drive down the right-field line. Schwartz added a run in the fourth, reaching on an error and scoring on a Zacharias single. Strohl also scored in the fifth, reaching on a single, advancing on an error and coming home on two wild pitches.

The Olympians kept fighting in the sixth. With one out, Zacharias doubled to left for her third hit of the game. Levins walked, and both runners advanced on wild pitches before Isabella Sully drove them in with a double to left.

But the day belonged to Lehighton, which snapped a four-game losing streak.

“Overall, we moved runners around,” Cashner said. “And we played pretty good defense, which we’ve been stressing in practice. We’ve been playing teams from the Colonial League that we’re not familiar with, which added to our losses, but I’m hoping this win gives us a confidence boost moving forward.”

WEATHER WOES ... The cold, blustery afternoon — dampened by late-game showers— contributed to the 27 total runs scored. The teams combined for 15 walks, 12 wild pitches and seven errors.
