Indians stay hot, shut out Jim Thorpe

Coming into its matchup with Jim Thorpe on Wednesday, the Lehighton baseball team had scored double-digit runs in five of its six games this season, all resulting in wins.

The Indians’ offense remained hot, continuing its recent scoring barrage with a 12-0 Colonial League victory over the Olympians in five innings.

“We play old-school baseball. We have a lot of unselfish players on this team,” Lehighton head coach J.C. Dietz said. “The roll we’re on right now has a lot to do with moving runners. Today, for instance, we had three squeeze bunts and two sacrifice flies. We just kind of play the game the old-school way, which is a lot different from how the game is played today.”

Lehighton’s offense wasted no time, jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Hits by Jayse Lawrence, John Light and Cody Snyder, followed by a two-run line-drive single to right field by Derek Behler, made it 2-0. A sacrifice bunt by Aiden Solt pushed the lead to 3-0, and Cole Dietz, who reached on a fielder’s choice, scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-0.

Jim Thorpe settled in over the next two innings, retiring Lehighton in order.

However, the Olympians struggled at the plate. Lehighton pitcher Aidan Albert kept them off balance with his off-speed pitches, not allowing a hit until the bottom of the third inning.

“Aidan Albert was magnificent on the mound for us today,” Dietz said. “He’s a senior this year, and has great experience as a starter for us over the last four years. His breaking stuff was working really well, and he kept their hitters off balance all day. He always wants the ball, and I can’t say enough about his performance.”

Lehighton’s offense erupted again in the fourth inning, scoring six runs.

Walks by Dietz and Solt, followed by a sacrifice bunt by Jake Lewis, put both runners in scoring position. An error on a pop-up from Albert, and another Jim Thorpe error off a sacrifice bunt extended the lead to 7-0.

Hits by Lawrence, Snyder and Behler — including an RBI-single from Snyder and a two-run single by Behler — pushed the advantage to 10-0.

The Indians put the game away in the fifth, adding two more runs. A leadoff walk by Dietz, a single by Solt, and a sacrifice fly from Lewis made it 11-0. Albert then drew another walk, and a second sacrifice fly of the inning, this time by Keyden Ahner, capped the scoring at 12-0.

Albert sealed the victory by retiring the Jim Thorpe batters in order in the bottom of the fifth, recording two strikeouts and a groundout.

“Our lineup right now, one through nine, is really hot. And honestly, this is just a fun team to be around,” Dietz said. “I mean, these kids get excited to bunt and move runners. But we have a long way to go. We’re off to a great start, but there’s still a lot of work to do.”

AT THE PLATE ... Lawrence, Behler and Snyder each had two hits for the Indians. Behler led the way with four RBIs. For Jim Thorpe, Mike Antignani and Kaden Hess recorded the team’s only hits.

ON THE MOUND ... Albert was dominant, throwing five scoreless innings while striking out five and not allowing a walk.
