WV routs Weatherly

Weatherly’s baseball team is on a quest to fix its shortcomings, but Tuesday’s clash with Williams Valley in a Schuylkill Baseball Division 2 game proved a stern test.

The Vikings delivered a powerful performance with 14 hits and a barrage of runs, ultimately winning 21-2.

Despite the game lasting only four innings and taking nearly two hours to complete, the frigid conditions kept even the most dedicated fans bundled up, with some opting for a campfire over their blankets as the sun tried to break through the chill.

Williams Valley appeared unfazed by the cold.

The Vikings exploded early, stringing together two consecutive six-run innings to establish a 12-1 lead after just two frames.

The visitors exploited five errors and three walks in the first inning alone. Chase Stomper ignited the offense with a double — the first of his three hits — and two RBIs, while Fletcher Thompson contributed both a single and a double during the rally.

In the second inning, Williams Valley continued to dominate by sending 12 batters to the plate and collecting six hits. Doubles from Thompson, Chase Diebert and Mike Boehmer further padded their lead, and Cam Berger’s double with runners on base added to the mounting score.

Meanwhile, the Wreckers struggled to find answers.

Weatherly did manage a spark of life in the first inning when Mike Davis led off with a single, stole second and third, and eventually scored on an error.

The Wreckers scored again in the third inning when Jerry Donadi drew a walk, advanced two bases, and then scored on a Ray Montz single.

However, by that point, the Vikings had built a commanding 13-2 lead.

Williams Valley briefly tempered its pace in the third inning, generating a run on singles by Stomper and Deibert coupled with three walks. In the fourth inning, the visitors unleashed eight runs — highlighted by Boehmer’s pivotal double — on a flurry that included six extra-base hits, capped by Evan Achenbach’s bases-clearing triple in the second inning.

TOUGH OUTING ... The game underscored Weatherly’s challenges on the mound, as inconsistent pitching made it difficult for the young, spirited team to stay competitive.

BABY IT’S COLD ... Despite the thermometer reading 49°F, the mountain winds brought the feel-like temperature down to around 30°F.

GUMPTION ... There was plenty of heart on the field, with Weatherly’s players displaying enthusiasm and determination that promises growth as they gain more experience.
