Barn fire cause not determined Heisler’s memorabilia destroyed Monday

The cause of a fire that destroyed a barn in Walker Township on Monday evening is undetermined.

“We don’t know how it started,” said Chad Felty, assistant chief of the Walker Township/New England Fire Company.

According to Felty, a neighbor spotted flames and smoke coming from the 4 Koch Lane structure just before 7 p.m. The barn was used to store memorabilia from nearby Heisler’s Cloverleaf Dairy.

The neighbor called 9-1-1 and within minutes crews were on the scene.

“There were flames coming out of the roof gables,” Felty said.

Due to the severity of the fire, additional help was requested. Fire companies from across Schuylkill and Carbon counties responded.

“Our main problem was the location,” Felty said. “It was down a narrow lane and it was hard to get the amount of water there that we needed.”

Multiple tanker trucks were brought to supply water. Felty said 1,000 feet of supply hose had to be laid to reach the burning structure.

While light rain fell Thursday evening, it didn’t help quell the flames. It was more of a hindrance, he said.

“The rain just made the ground muddy,” Felty said. “The trucks could not move around correctly and some got stuck in the mud.”

Photos from the scene show flames barreling high above the wooden structure’s roof.

“The barn was used for storage,” Felty said. “There were no animals or livestock inside.”

It did contain some memorabilia from Heisler’s.

An antique firetruck was also housed in the barn but Felty said it was not damaged. A home about 30 yards away from the barn was also not impacted by the fire.

Flames were under control by 10 p.m., he noted.

“As far as the turnout, there were lots of apparatus and lots of help,” Felty said. “It took a lot of people to accomplish what we did there. ...

“Everybody got home safe. I would like to thank all the responding community volunteer fire companies for their help in extinguishing the fire.”
