A Management Review Study by the administration of Gov. Milton Shapp has resulted in the stoppage of plans for a second tunnel on the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

While the construction project was scheduled to be put out for bid this spring, the administration said the funds that would be used for the project will now go towards the commonwealth’s $218 million 1974 bind indebtedness.

The need for a new tunnel had been cited because of increased industrial growth in the Lehigh Valley and popularity of the Pocono Mountains.

The existing 4,641-foot tunnel was built in 1957 and squeezes four lanes into two lanes over the Carbon-Lehigh county lines.

The cost of the new tunnel was listed at $9.5 million, including engineering and construction estimates.
