Mother, 2 children displaced following Lehighton fire

A Lehighton family has been displaced from their home after a fire broke out Sunday night in the borough.

Borough fire Chief Patrick Mriss said firefighters responded at around 9:30 p.m. to a single home at 131 S. Seventh St. for a report of a dwelling fire.

Mriss said that upon arrival, firefighters encountered smoke conditions coming from the eaves of the dwelling, and noted that the EMS crew was already on scene.

“Dispatch said the caller had visible fire in the kitchen as she was exiting the home,” Mriss said. “The first crews went in, encountered fire in the kitchen, extinguished, and the fire was under control in 20 minutes.”

Mriss said firefighters remained on scene to check for extension and ventilate for about the next hour.

He said the mother and her two young children were able to escape the home without injury.

Mriss said the cause of the fire is under investigation.

He said the home suffered fire damage to the kitchen area and smoke and water damage.

Mriss added that the home is uninhabitable, and that the mother and her two children are staying with family.

He said Lehighton Ambulance, Lehighton Borough Police Department, and Lehighton fire police also assisted at the scene.
