Local Roundup: Results from March 29

Tamaqua had a walk-off baseball win on Saturday, while Lehighton and Northwestern both crushed their opponents to remain undefeated.

Pleasant Valley’s girls lacrosse team also stayed perfect in the early season.

Other winners included the Jim Thorpe baseball team, as well as the Indians, Blue Raiders and Fillies in softball action.

BASEBALL

Jim Thorpe-Palisades

Zack Murphy scored the go-ahead and eventual winning run with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh when teammate Nikolas Schwartz was hit by a pitch as Jim Thorpe edged Palisades, 2-1, in Colonial League play.

The game was a pitchers’ duel between Jim Thorpe’s Kaden Hess and Palisades’ Jack Trickel. Hess allowed one run and one hit with four strikeouts and one walk over seven innings, while Trickel issued two runs on six hits with six strikeouts and three walks over six innings.

Cole Lazorick had three of the Olympians’ four stolen bases.

Tamaqua-Eastburg South

Jake Yenser’s two-run walk-off single helped Tamaqua topple East Stroudsburg South, 4-3, and raise its record to 6-0.

Mason Ligenza hit a solo homer in the first, one of only five hits for the Blue Raiders. Luke Kane’s sacrifice fly gave Tamaqua a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third. Ligenza also swiped two bases and scored three runs.

Gavan Hess and Noah Mateyak combined to limit East Stroudsburg South to four hits. Hess started the game and gave up three runs and two hits with two strikeouts and two walks over 4.1 innings.

Northwestern-Catasauqua

Watson Church collected three hits and knocked in two runs to help Northwestern keep its untarnished season intact with a 17-0 Colonial League whitewash of Catasauqua.

Brady Krimmel and Luke Rennels each had two hits and two RBIs, while Nolan Fitzgerald had two hits and an RBI, as the Tigers accumulated 17 singles of their 19-hit total. Northwestern pushed across 10 runs in the top of the seventh to seal the win.

Northwestern’s Jesse Neupaurr allowed two hits, struck out six, and walked three over five innings.

Lehighton-Salisbury

Jayse Lawrence had three hits and three RBIs to help keep Lehighton undefeated with a 13-3 rout of Salisbury in a battle of unbeaten Colonial League teams.

Lawrence had a two-run single during a five-run fifth inning that gave the Indians a 10-3 advantage. Cody Snyder, Cole Dietz, Lewis and Aiden Albert each added two hits for the winners.

Derek Behler and Brady Stubits combined to hold Salisbury to five hits in the five-inning, shortened game.

Northern Lehigh-Pen Argyl

Northern Lehigh’s Connor Simms struck out 12, but the Bulldogs couldn’t muster any offense in a 3-0 loss to Pen Argyl.

The Green Knights’ Caden Vishnesky handcuffed Northern Lehigh to two hits and struck out 12. Nick Haros went 3-for-3 with an RBI for Pen Argyl.

The Bulldogs committed six errors that led to two unearned runs.

Marian-Central Catholic

Nolan Young had three hits and Ryan Rooney knocked in three runs as Allentown Central Catholic kept its record unblemished with an 11-5 non-league victory over Marian.

Central Catholic took an 8-1 lead after two innings and held off the Colts the rest of the way.

Noah Bauder had two hits for Marian and Alex Diaz, Cole Defrancisco and Rocco Griguoli, who started the game on the mound, each plated a run.

SOFTBALL

Lehighton-Salisbury

Lehighton outlasted Salisbury 11-8 in a wild back-and-forth Colonial League matchup.

The Indians got the scoring started in the first with five runs, including a grand slam from Makayla Scott, only for the Falcons to respond with four in the bottom half. After several more punches and counter punches led to an 8-8 tie, the Indians broke through with a three-run seventh on two walks and a HBP.

Ava Trach went the distance for the Indians with seven strikeouts and allowed only one earned run.

Scott finished 4-for-4 with five RBIs. Scott, Amber Yeakel, Trach and Makenna Snyder all scored two runs, while Morgan Myers stole three bases.

Marian-Wilson

Deanna Pugh had a big day at the plate to help Marian gain a 12-1 non-league victory over Wilson.

Pugh went 4-for-5 with two RBIs and three runs scored, while Hailey Treskolasky chipped in a team-high three RBIs and a run scored as part of a 2-for-4 performance.

Kayla Birrer gained the win, shutting out the Warriors over the first five innings. Birrer finished with five strikeouts.

Karlye Teman struck out 16 batters, reached base three times and knocked in a run to help propel Palisades to a 13-4 win over Jim Thorpe in Colonial League play.

The Pirates also received RBIs from Jordyn Bonelli, Brooklyn Lucas and Rhriley Poniktera.

Isabella Sully had a two-run hit for the Olympians.

Ceanna Gormley, Leah Crowley and Naomi Knitter each had two RBIs as Tamaqua rolled past Executive Education 17-1 in non-league play.

The Raiders also received RBIs from six other batters, while Knitter shut the Raptors down in the circle with six strikeouts while only allowing one hit.

Nico Conahan, Gormley, Knitter and Megan Linkhorst all finished with two hits.

Jillian Bradley edged out Addison Smith in a pitcher’s duel as Pen Argyl defeated Northern Lehigh 3-0 in Colonial League competition.

After remaining scoreless through the first five innings, the Green Knights broke through in the sixth on a two-run double from Ashlyn Oessenick, and an RBI single by Angelina Beltran.

Bradley struck out 12 batters and allowed only one walk in a four-hit shutout, while Smith did her job for the Bulldogs with six strikeouts and only one walk allowed.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Pleasant Valley-Methacton

Pleasant Valley outscored Methacton 10-1 in the first half to run away with a 15-2 victory in non-league play.

Devon Bush led the Bears in scoring with four goals and an assist, while Rylee Rath and Olivia Iandoli each finished with a hat trick.

Rath also contributed three helpers, while Sam Miller chipped in with a pair of goals.

Lehighton defeated Palmerton 3-2 in Colonial League action.

Bayto and Bekim Corkrlija both posted wins for the Indians in each of their singles.

Anderson Garcia-Escobar took home a Blue Bombers’ singles win, which set up Dante Kalbach and Jed Cordes to win the first doubles match and win the event.

Josh Merkel and Bryce Willis won the second doubles match for the Bombers.
