Franklin hosts event to promote the outdoors

The Franklin Township Volunteer Fire Company held its fourth annual Outdoor Adventure Day Saturday on the fire company grounds along Fairyland Road.

The purpose of the event was to promote the great outdoors.

“We try to get as many activities to get people out and moving around, so they do have an active life,” explained Chris Lilly, president of the Franklin Township Fire Company Auxiliary. “We are coming up on summer; everything should start popping up. People will be very, very busy.”

The event featured vendors like Hoff’s Kettle Corn and the Franklin Township Fire Company kitchen was open selling plenty of delicious food and drinks.

The basket auction had a lot of interesting items like safari trips to South Africa, Argentina, and New Zealand; tickets to Kalahari Resort, Great Wolf Lodge, Camelback and Camelbeach; rafting trips with Pocono Whitewater Rafting, Jim Thorpe River Adventures, and Whitewater Adventure.

Among the organizations that were there was the Wildland Fire Fighters from the Bureau of Forestry, Weiser Forest District.

“It’s forest fire season, and we wanted everyone to know who they are and what they do,” Lilly said.

They had one of their off-road vehicles, demonstrations on how they pack backpacks for when they need to go out into the forest, and answered people’s questions.

With the dry weather and warnings about the dangers of fires, Warden Eric Lilly said this has been a busy year, so far.

“This year, it’s starting out busy,” Eric Lilly said. “But, small fires, hopefully, they slow down and/or reduce. But, as conditions change, things are getting dryer and windier, the chance of fire is a lot worse, so we’ll get busier over the next month. We need some rain to help get rid of the drought.”

“I run the group,” Lilly explained. “Pat (Dwinell) and Austin (Lilly) assist me. The others are all crew members and help in fighting fires.”

The Weiser Forest District includes the counties of Carbon, Schuylkill, Dauphin, Columbia, Lebanon, Montour, and Northumberland.
