Motorcyclist killed on turnpike Police say he was struck by wrong-way driver

A motorcycle driver was killed Sunday morning when he was hit by a wrong way driver on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Washington Township.

The Lehigh County coroner’s office said John Joseph Sweeney Jr., 50, of Bristol, was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:10 a.m.

The incident happened at 9:09 a.m. near the 67 mile marker.

The Pennsylvania State Police Pocono Station said a 2019 Honda HRV, operated by a 24-year-old woman from Perth Amboy, New Jersey, was driving southbound, in the northbound lanes of travel and struck two motorcycles, from a group of six, that were driving together, causing a fatal crash.

Sweeney, operating a 2016 Harley Davidson motorcycle, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 24-year-old man, also from Bristol, Bucks County, was injured and treated at the scene by Northern Valley Emergency Medical Services and transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital Cedar Crest for his injuries.

The operator of the Honda had minor injuries.

All traffic traveling northbound on the Turnpike was detoured onto the Lehigh Valley exit. Traffic entering the Turnpike from State Route 22 was unable to access Northbound.

The scene was cleared by 1:20 p.m. and all lane restrictions were lifted.

Southbound lanes of travel remained open throughout this investigation.
