Police: Suspect hit man in head
A man has been charged with assault after striking another man in the head with an object in Franklin Township.
According to an affidavit filed by Officer Jared Green of the Franklin Township Police Department, officers were dispatched at 9:41 p.m. Monday to a home on Canal Street for an assault.
Witnesses reported that Kyle Kubin, 41, of Lehighton, hit the victim in the head with a shiny blunt object or pipe before fleeing.
Officers Green and Chris Lekka arrived to find three people gathered around the victim, who had a towel on his bleeding head.
The man had cuts on his forehead and scalp.
Witnesses said Kubin confronted the victim about a past girlfriend, was told to leave, but returned to a shed where he repeatedly struck the victim with the object.
One witness, who was unloading supplies in the shed, said Kubin charged in and attacked.
Another witness, unloading a truck, heard the victim yelling and saw him running toward the house, bleeding.
That witness called 911.
Emergency personnel treated the victim, who was taken to St. Luke’s Carbon Campus for stitches and extensive tests, including a CAT scan and X-rays.
At 4:10 p.m. Thursday the Lehighton Borough Police Department assisted the Attorney General’s Office with apprehending Kubin.
The Attorney General’s Office provided information that Kubin was traveling in the area and entering the borough of Lehighton. Kubin was believed to be in possession of a firearm.
The vehicle Kubin was traveling in, turned into a gas station on Blakeslee Boulevard. Multiple police agencies converged on the location and took Kubin into custody without incident.
During the apprehension, authorities said Kubin was found to be in possession of large amounts of controlled substances: 321 grams of methamphetamine; 41.5 grams of cocaine; and 32.8 grams of heroin. He also had $730 in cash and a digital scale.
Kubin was charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, and harassment.
Lehighton police said Kubin will be facing additional felony charges for possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance.
He is being held at the Carbon County Correctional Facility on $200,000 cash bail.
A preliminary hearing is set for April 9 before District Judge William J. Kissner of Palmerton.
