Weatherly to rebid Eurana Park upgrades
Weatherly Borough Council will rebid a project for upgrades to Eurana Park, including basketball courts, pickleball, courtyard and handicapped accessible pathways.
The borough received no bids on the project, even though five firms requested specifications, Borough Manager Harold Pudliner said Monday.
He plans to reach out to the firms to see why they did not bid on the project and rebid the project, he said.
Pudliner did not know if he’d have the bids ready for council’s meeting next month, and suggested that council might need a special meeting to move the project forward this year.
Council will also rebid Contract 11 for its trail connecting the borough to the 164-mile Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor inside the Lehigh Gorge State Park. The contract involves drainage on the trail, Pudliner said.
Only one firm, Herbener Trucking & Excavating, bid on the project, and four firms requested bid packages.
Pudliner believed the low bid was higher than expected, and asked to rebid the project.
Council did award one contract for a trail feasibility study for a connection between the Greater Hazleton Rails to Trails and Weatherly’s trailhead.
Weatherly is working in conjunction with state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and state Sen. David Argall’s office on the project, Pudliner said.
“They asked us to write the grant,” he said.
The borough sought requests for proposals for the feasibility study. Three firms, Pudliner said, sent proposals: Benesch Engineering at $59,760; Atlas Technical Consultants at $91,180; and Barry Isett at $50,000.
The Greenways, Trails and Recreation Program grant is for roughly $50,000, Pudliner said, and he suggested that council award the contract to Barry Isett, the low bidder, which council did.
“The only thing we’re going to be doing is monitoring the (grant) activity,” Pudliner said. “With the grant, they’re doing everything. We’re not getting involved as far as how they want to do their route or anything else.
“We just monitoring that they’re doing it properly, as per the grant,” he said.
