Miss Marjorie Wieder of Weatherly High School was announced as the winner of the Monroe and Carbon Counties Essay Contest sponsored by the American Legion National Education and Scholarship Committee.

She will receive a four-year senatorial scholarship offered by Sen. William Z. Scott of Lansford.

Runners-up in the contest were Jean Pappalardo of East Stroudsburg High School, Paulette Heiney, Pleasant Valley High School, Ann Roscoe, Nesquehoning High School, and Thomas Tonon, Marian Catholic High School, who finished in place second through fifth, respectively.

The subject of the essay was “How Does a Free Press Help to Safeguard Democratic Principles?”
