A school board member’s desire to keep “woke nonsense” out of Lehighton Area School District’s educational system stirred controversy Monday night.
Discussion arose from a comment earlier this month by LASD resident Roy James, who pushed for a classroom monitoring system citing concerns over educational effectiveness.
“I think we need to do more to actually look at what’s actually happening in the classroom,” James told the board.
He suggested installing a monitoring system that would allow administrators to oversee teachers without prior notice.
During the discussion, director Duane Dellecker shifted the focus to the school’s curriculum and broader educational priorities.
“I refuse to accept mediocre as an outcome of our educational system,” Dellecker said. “I can care less about the state averages. What’s going on here in Lehighton? We need to produce the best possible children we can. Let’s concentrate on reading, writing, arithmetic, and science. Let’s educate them and get rid of all this woke nonsense going on out there.”
On Monday night, district parent Brian Shaner asked Dellecker to explain what “woke nonsense” he was talking about.
“Litter boxes in classrooms,” Dellecker responded. “I’m also concerned about the indoctrination of our children.”
Dellecker did not provide specific examples of issues within Lehighton schools but expressed concerns over national trends.
“I don’t have any specific instances here,” he said. “All I know is what you read on the national level coming out, especially the cities. I want to keep that stuff out of Lehighton.”
Shaner responded by reminding Dellecker of his role as a school board member.
“Just to remind you,” Shaner said, “You’re a professional setting an example for the children that go to the school. Your words matter. Act that way. Please, sir. Thank you.”
