Maple Shade hosts fundraiser for 2 charities

Maple Shade Meadows in Nesquehoning held a fundraiser on Saturday featuring bingo, a bake sale and raffle tickets, with money going to two local charities.

“The money we raise goes to the American Cancer Society and to Family Promise of Nesquehoning,” said Maria Mitchell, admissions and marketing director at Maple Shade.

The bingo was open to the public as well as residents at Maple Shade.

Residents played for free, visitors purchased bingo boards to play. It was a chance for the community to mingle with the residents, and for the residents to enjoy an afternoon of food and fun.

“We like doing different things to involve the community,” Mitchell said. “It’s important for the residents, too, to do these things.”

Prizes for the bingo were donated by area businesses: La Dolce Casa, Tommy’s (Jim Thorpe), Coal Miners Bar and Grill, Panther Creek Pharmacy, Gaetano’s Pizza, Rosetta’s Pizza, True Value Hardware, St. Luke’s Hospice and Porvaznik’s Flowers.

“We also want to thank all the family members and staff for the baked foods for the bake sale and other donations,” Karen Kukol, assistant in activities at Maple Shade, added.

“Our next public event will be an open house, April 27th from 2 to 4 p.m.,” Mitchell said. “The public is welcome to come and meet the staff and the doctors, we’ll have live music, and more.”
