Lehighton author helps children care for dogs

A Lehighton native has been named an award winner for her children’s book about caring for a pet dog.

Janice Gasker, who currently resides in Fleetwood, was recently named a Mom’s Choice Award winner for her children’s book, “Remy, Fetch Some Zzzz’s.” The Mom’s Choice Awards evaluate products and services created for parents and educators to create a comprehensive list of items to help children be their best self.

The book, which is geared toward children ages 4 to 8, shows readers about the importance of bedtime routines and proper pet care.

It stars Remy, a small dog with black fur and a white chin, who likes to play tricks, especially at bedtime.

“In ‘Remy, Fetch Some Zzzz’s,’ Kiddo figures out how to help Remy get to sleep,” Gasker said. “Readers also learn tips on how to care for their furry best friend. The book is perfect for dog owners and those dreaming of getting a dog one day.”

She said that her goal for the book was showing children about the importance of being kind to animals; while also showing parents that it is possible to discipline with kindness.

Her inspiration for the book also can be found flying around her house.

“I have two dogs — Atticus and Elizabeth Bennet,” Gasker said, noting that every trick Remy plays in the book is one that one of her dogs has played on her family. Remy is also a real dog, owned by Gasker’s daughter, making him her “grand dog.”

This is Gasker’s first children’s book, however she is no stranger to the published world.

With over 30 years of social work practice under her belt, Gasker has written several books overviewing social work topics, including the textbook “Generalist Social Work Practice.” She is currently a professor at Kutztown University.
