Dear editor:
I am a supporter of the Pennsylvania system of state stores selling spirits and wines. I like the fact that their employees are unionized. I like that you don’t have a collection of miscreants hanging around the liquor store like you do in many other states. I like that the stores never serve underaged patrons, and that they make money for the Commonwealth. What I don’t like is what is happening in Lehighton.
The Lehighton Borough is doing its best to bring people back to the downtown in the face of competition from the “big box” stores and problems with parking. Now I learn that the Wine and Spirits store is moving out to 443.
Has the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board discussed the move with the Lehighton Borough Council? Was the public informed of the prospective move? Do the members of the PLCB care about the economic well-being of the communities they serve?
I expect this kind of behavior from private chains. I don’t expect it from an official governmental agency of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
