Palmerton settles on charter payments

Palmerton Area School District reached a settlement agreement Tuesday with the Pennsylvania Leadership Charter School regarding a billing discrepancy.

Palmerton officials said the negotiation process stemmed from a request made by PALCS dating back to the 2015-16 school year.

According to Business Manager Ryan Kish, the issue arose when PALCS conducted an accounting review and discovered discrepancies in how they had billed Palmerton and other school districts across the state.

“They found a discrepancy where they should (have) billed us,” Kish said.

“They did this with numerous schools around the state. It’s unfortunate we have to deal with this a decade down the road because they found out they didn’t bill correctly.”

Solicitor Shawn Lochinger said the charter school initially requested $3,600 from Palmerton but the two sides settled for around $1,800.

“At the end of the day, it’s significantly less money than what the district would spend (on legal fees) to fight it,” Lochinger said.
