Bob Mertz was named Citizen of the Year Saturday night by the Franklin Township Lions Club when it celebrated its Eighth Annual Charter Night at the Franklin Township Volunteer Fire Company.

Mertz was honored for his service as a 14-year member of the fire company and also has served 14 years with the Franklin Quick Service unit, as a volunteer medical first responders unit; and has been with the Lehighton Ambulance Association for 13 years.

He volunteers to help local Boy Scout units with first aid and fireman merit badges and has developed a fire prevention program at the Small World Day Care Program.
