Local roundup: Results from March 21

The Northern Lehigh, Lehighton, Jim Thorpe and Tamaqua baseball teams all earned victories on Friday.

BASEBALL

Northern Lehigh-Palmerton

Northern Lehigh turned back Palmerton to claim a 5-4 Colonial League victory.

Three runs in the top of the fifth inning helped the Bulldogs take a 4-2 lead, with Brayden Buskirk’s single and two errors accounting for the three runs. Parker Schaffer had an RBI groundout in the first inning to give Northern Lehigh a 1-0 lead. Landen Cougle’s sacrifice fly to score Braedon Dougherty in the top of the sixth made it 5-2 and proved to be the difference. Connor Simms tossed six-and-a-third innings, striking out seven to earn the win. Jayden Christman closed the door to earn the save.

The Bombers scored a run in the sixth and another in the bottom of the seventh. AJ Borger (triple), Luke Matsko, Brady Reph and Jason Carelli (triple) each had two hits for Palmerton, which out-hit Northern Lehigh 9-3 in the contest.

Notre Dame GP-Lehighton

Lehighton erupted for eight runs in the third inning en route to a 12-8 Colonial League win over Notre Dame Green Pond.

Derek Behler was 2-for-2 with two triples, four RBIs and two runs scored for the Tribe, who also plated four runs in the fourth inning to increase their lead to 12-1. Jake Lewis added a double and knocked in three runs, while Jayse Lawrence went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Connor Albert and Clemente Cintron (two runs scored) each had two hits for the Crusaders, who pushed across six runs over the final three innings.

Wilson-Jim Thorpe

Dominant pitching from Brody Schrantz and a big day at the plate by powered Jim Thorpe to a 10-0 Colonial League win over Wilson.

Schrantz struck out 10 in four-and-a-third innings of work without allowing a hit, while Nikolas Schwartz went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a double and Noah Pastor went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Cole Lazorick added two hits, knocked in two and scored twice. Kaden Hess also doubled with an RBI and a run scored.

Schuylkill Valley-Tamaqua

Three Tamaqua pitchers combined for a two-hitter in a 9-1 nonleague win over Schuykill Valley.

Jake Yenser (3 innings, 1 hit 4 strike outs), Gavan Hess (2 IP, 1H, 3K) and Noah Mateyak (2 IP, 0H, 5K) combined to walk 10 batters and pitched around one error.

Leadoff hitter Mason Ligenza went 2-for-1 with an RBI and 3 runs for Tamqua. Cooper Ansbach went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI and a run.

Notre Dame-Lehigthon

Notre Dame scored 14 runs in the second inning and another 10 in the fourth in a 28-4 win over Lehighton.

Amber Yeakel went 3-for-3 for Lehighton, while teammate Ava Track was 2-for-2.

Claire Ceraul went 5-for-5 with five RBI and four runs for Notre Dame. Addison Ryan was 4-for-5 and teammates Hannah Lilly, Natalie Lilly, Riley Palank and Gabrielle Apgar had three hits each for Notre Dame.

A six-run fourth inning punctuated Hanover’s 11-0 non-league win over Weatherly.

Madison Ponko had a triple and three RBIs for Hanover. Madison Brown, Madison Neimeier (2-for-3, two runs scored) and Roxy Brandolino (RBI) each had doubles, while Natalie Weidner blasted a home run and scored twice. Caitlin Vigorito went five innings, striking out five to earn the win.

Olivia Marasco had a triple among her two hits for the Wreckers.

Northwestern-Nazareth

A quick start helped Nazareth claim a 7-1 non-league win over Northwestern.

Hailey Mandala roped a three-run double in the first inning. The hosts added two runs in the second on an error, and plated two more in the third when Gianna Perillo doubled and Lily Moretti brought in a run on a fielder’s choice. Mandala and Perillo each had two hits for the winners. Kylie Groves went the distance in the circle, allowing six hits and one run, striking out five.

Rylee McGinley led the Tigers with three hits in four at-bats.

Wilson-Jim Thorpe

Wilson pounded out 16 hits en route to a 20-9 Colonial League win over Jim Thorpe.

Abymarie Colon (four RBIs, three runs scored) and Tessa Fredericks (three RBIs, three runs scored) each had four hits for the Warriors. Anna Schmitt (3-for-5, three RBIs, three runs scored) and Sabrena Espinosa (2-for-5, RBI) also had multiple hits for the winners.

Mara Levins was 3-for-3 with a home run, double and six RBIs for the Olympians. Madison Schwartz (three RBis) and Isabella Sully (RBI, run scored) both finished with two hits, while Gloria Strohl added a home run with two RBIs and Hannah Zacharias doubled and scored twice.

Tamaqua-Hamburg

Hamburg used a five-run fifth inning to come from behind and beat Tamaqua 9-5 in a nonleague game.

Kolbe Robb went 3-for-4 for the Blue Raiders, while teammates Nico Conahan (2-for-3, 2 runs), Ceanna Gormley (2-for-3, 2 RBI, run) and Veronica Scott (3-for-3) all contributed to Tamaqua’s 13-hit effort.

Six different Hawks hitters had two hits each in the win.
