A Franklin Township man suffered burns after a controlled burn got out of control Wednesday afternoon.
Township fire Chief Lynn Diehl said firefighters were dispatched around 12:15 p.m. for a controlled burn at 230 Gerald Drive.
“It was basically a controlled burn that got away from the homeowner,” Diehl said. “He was burning a brush pile behind the residence and it got away into the woods; it’s very rural and a lot of wooded area behind him.”
Diehl said the homeowner was taken to the hospital after he received unknown burn-related injuries while fighting the fire before firefighters arrived on the scene.
He said there was no structure involved, but that between 1 and 1.5 acres burned.
“With all the leaves and ground cover, as soon as you get a little sunny weather and wind, it takes the moisture out of the ground cover and just burns very easily,” he said. “It was moving pretty good.”
Diehl said firefighters were on the scene for about an hour-and-a-half.
He said also assisting at the scene were the Parryville Fire Department, Bowmanstown Fire Department and the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ Bureau of Forestry.
“It’s that time of year,” Diehl said. “Try to limit your burning to rainy days, and make sure it’s controlled and contained.”
