Woman charged in baby’s death; court papers say she did drugs and placed baby in her bed

A Nesquehoning woman was charged over the weekend with involuntary manslaughter in the death of her infant son in February 2024.

Michelle Canzoneri, 39, of East Garibaldi Avenue, was arraigned by District Judge William J. Kissner on Saturday on charges of involuntary manslaughter, endangering the welfare of children, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

She was jailed in the Carbon County Correctional Facility in lieu of $100,000 bail.

According to court papers, Canzoneri was under the influence of multiple drugs, including clonazepam, methamphetamine and fentanyl, when she discovered her infant son was not breathing on the morning of Feb. 8. The incident happened at 8 Rhume St. in Nesquehoning.

The baby was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital, Miners Campus, where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy revealed the baby, identified by the coroner as 5-month-old Nathan Kostak, died from asphyxia, court papers said.

Canzoneri provided police with inconsistent statements, and later admitted to illegal drug use the night before, court paper said.

She told police that she snorted drugs the night before the death, and had placed the baby in bed with her. She admitted that she was exhausted from drug use and caring for the baby, and wasn’t sure if she nodded off or fell asleep, court papers said.

Canzoneri called 911 to report that she woke and found her son not breathing just after 10 a.m. on Feb. 8.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled March 26 before District Judge Beth Dodson.
