Lansford Borough Council chose to not move ahead with raises for the mayor and council, and tabled a motion for further discussion.
Councilwoman Michele Bartek asked to put the matter before council at its meeting Wednesday, raising salaries for council members from $75 to $150 a month, and the mayor to $175, effective immediately.
Solicitor Bob Yurchak said borough council can’t make that change, and the increases would have to be adopted by ordinance.
He was willing to provide sample ordinances, he said, and he has done that for other municipalities that he represents.
Council members and residents pointed out that any increase couldn’t take effect immediately, as this council would be setting the salary for those in office next year.
Yurchak agreed.
Councilman Jack Soberick said that he would be opposed to any increase in salary for council members or mayor, as the town is in “dire straits.”
