Coaldale sets committee to study police options

Coaldale Borough Council rearranged membership of a committee that is looking at options for police coverage.

Councilwoman Angela Krapf will replace Councilman Frank Hutta on the committee.

Krapf will serve with council members Kim Gavornick and Jacob Adamitis.

“They’re going to do a little research for the police department support in this municipality,” Remington said.

Coaldale has been relying on Pennsylvania State Police for coverage since the beginning of the New Year. The borough’s force began to dwindle with the resignation of police Chief Joseph Krebs in September. By December, all officers had either resigned or retired.

Remington hoped the committee would have some suggestions prepared for the April council meeting.

In an unrelated matter, council heard a report from its code enforcement officer.

Luis Negron, of Systems Design Engineering, said he posted seven condemnation notices and 15 violation notices on properties in the borough.

He said he is in the process of checking additional properties for violations.

In other business, council:

• Noted that 62 applications for the borough secretary position were received. Council will review applications and schedule interviews.

• Approved sending Scott Gerber, the borough’s new emergency management coordinator, to free training in Schuylkill Haven.

• Voted in favor of an ordinance that would require amusement ride operators or anyone working with children to have Act 34 clearances before being hired for community events. The ordinance was suggested by Mayor Eric Ramirez in February.

• Revised moving permit fees to $10 per adult, and $5 for senior citizen or disabled person. Fees had been $25.

• Set May 31 and June 1 as the days for the borough-wide yard sale.
