Slatington woman charged after high-speed chase

A Slatington woman has been charged after police said she fled a traffic stop, leading to a multicounty chase.

According to an affidavit of probable cause filed by Trooper Jonathan Zook of the Pennsylvania State Police, Chambersburg barracks, Christine Moffett was involved in the incident.

Zook was called at 3:16 p.m. March 3 to assist Lt. Tandy Carey with a fleeing vehicle from her traffic stop on Interstate 81 north near mile marker 26 in Southampton Township, Franklin County.

Carey was traveling northbound on I-81 when she saw a white Hyundai Santa Fe in the right lane going at a high rate of speed.

The vehicle moved into the left lane in front of her patrol car without using a turn signal and continued speeding until it was slowed by a commercial motor vehicle.

Once the commercial vehicle moved into the right lane, the Hyundai continued northbound in the left lane at 110 mph.

Carey activated her emergency lights and siren, prompting the Hyundai to switch to the right lane without signaling and come to a stop on the off-ramp at I-81 north Exit 29 (King Street) in Cumberland County.

After running a check on the vehicle, Carey confirmed Moffett, 53, as the registered owner. Carey approached the driver’s side and saw Moffett alone in the vehicle. Moffett asked, “Where is the Capitol located?”

Carey asked Moffett to provide her driver’s license, vehicle registration and proof of insurance.

Moffett refused and instead made several nonsensical statements, including, “This is a fake traffic stop,” “There is no way I was going fast” and “This is police corruption.”

Moffett continued refusing to provide the requested documents, then suddenly announced she was leaving. She placed the vehicle in drive and sped away.

Carey returned to her patrol car and pursued Moffett, who went on several local roads before reentering I-81 south via the King Street on-ramp, reaching speeds of 85 mph while switching lanes and failing to yield.

At mile marker 26, Carey was positioned in the crossover with her emergency lights and siren activated. She saw Moffett continuing southbound. Zook, who was in a marked patrol unit, took over the pursuit.

Moffett continued refusing to yield to Zook’s emergency lights and siren, leading him to perform a precision immobilization technique maneuver. The maneuver was successful, and Moffett’s vehicle came to a stop in the left lane of I-81 south.

Zook and Carey approached the vehicle and gave Moffett verbal commands to exit, but she refused.

Police forcibly removed her from the vehicle as she physically resisted arrest.

Moffett was taken into custody and is in Franklin County Jail on multiple charges, including: fleeing or attempting to elude an officer; disorderly conduct; resisting arrest; speeding; careless driving; reckless driving; failure to use turn signals; and obstructing a police investigation.

Bail was denied. She is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on April 15.
