Quick action saves home from fire

A quick response by police and volunteers from the Weatherly Fire Department is being credited with saving a home from fire damage, following a brush fire at about 12:10 p.m. Monday in the area of East Main Street.

The Weatherly Police Department said police and the firefighters were dispatched to a report of the brush fire moving toward a primary residence. They said police arrived at the scene within minutes and notified a 9-1-1- dispatcher of the situation that prompted a swift response by the firefighters.

They said the firefighters brought the blaze under control with minimal damage to the residence and property.

The news release, in part, states, “We are fortunate to have a fire department with members who are active and fast with their responses when a call comes in.”

Officials said investigators with the police department were able to locate the cause of the fire being an underground wire that was running to an outbuilding on the property.

They said the wire shorted out and ignited the dry debris in the yard.

Firefighters remained on the scene for about two hours until it was determined there was no threat of the fire reigniting.
