MARCH 8, 1983

Nineteen cars and a caboose of the Lehigh Valley Railroad derailed a quarter-mile south of Weissport this morning. It was the third derailment on the Lehigh Valley line this week.

The train was headed by three Delaware and Hudson locomotives and followed by a D&H caboose, with most of the cars being loaded with miscellaneous cargo and remaining upright.

Wrecking crews were summoned to the scene, where about 300 yards of northbound right-of-way was torn up by the dragging wheels of the freight cars.

The wreck was apparently caused when a joint broke, causing the rails to spread.

On Sunday, eight LVRR cars derailed near Pittston, and on Wednesday, 16 others came off the tracks in Mountaintop.
