Fire company sets fundraisers for family
A local fire company will hold several fundraisers for a Slatington family who lost their home in a fire in January.
A fundraiser for the Richards family kicks off with Vince’s Cheeseteaks from noon-6 p.m. Thursday in the Diamond Fire Company Social Club parking lot, 100 Washington St., Walnutport.
Vince’s Cheesesteaks will give $1 for each cheesesteak it sells that day, according to Michael Gaston, bar manager, Diamond Fire Company Social Club.
The Diamond Fire Company Social Hall will hold a Dine to Donate that’s open to the public from 4:30-8 p.m. March 12-14 and 4:30-8 p.m. March 19-21, with 20% of the proceeds raised to go to the family.
Also, a Fire Bingo Fundraiser will be held March 23 at the Diamond Fire Company. Doors open at 11 a.m., and the game starts at 1 p.m. ($25 package) and features 17 games at $100, with a jackpot game at $1,250. Proceeds from the bingo game will go to the family as well. The kitchen will be open. Tickets for the bingo game may be purchased in advance.
Gaston noted that Vince’s Cheesesteaks will give $1 for each cheese steak it sells.
He said the Diamond Fire Company Social Club will donate 20% from what it takes in on the six nights of the Dine to Donate, and whatever proceeds are raised during the bingo game will be donated to family as well.
Gaston said the fundraisers are a way for the fire company to help out the Richards’ family.
“The focus is the family that is involved here, that’s what we’re doing it for,” Gaston said. “We want the public to come out and help the family.”
Several people, including two children, were injured in January when a fire tore through the family’s single home at 424 Second St. in Slatington.
Slatington Borough Deputy Fire Chief Jason Nicholas said firefighters responded at 12:28 a.m. Jan. 15 to the home, where smoke was reported coming from the roof.
Nicholas said Slatington Borough Police were the first to arrive on-scene and confirmed a working fire with heavy smoke and flames coming from the roof extending from the second floor.
He said the first arriving crews confirmed the working fire had extended outside of the residence and was encroaching on 432 and 434 Second St., which sustained moderate exterior damage to the siding, but no interior damage, and the families were able to return to those residences.
Nicholas said the Diamond Fire Company of Walnutport assisted a disabled party in one of the residences back into the residence because he uses a wheelchair.
However, he said four occupants from the 424 Second St. building, two children and two adults, had smoke inhalation and minor burns.
Nicholas said they were all transported from the scene to the burn center at Lehigh Valley Hospital — Cedar Crest by Northampton Regional EMS, as well as Palmerton and Lehighton Ambulance. In addition, Nicholas said two firefighters slipped on ice and fell but were not injured.
He said the home at 424 Second St. was a total loss. Nicholas said that while the fire is believed to have started on the second floor, the cause of the blaze was unknown and was under investigation by the department’s fire marshal.
He said it took firefighters between 30 to 45 minutes to knock down the fire, and added they remained on the scene for nearly five hours.
Nicholas said also assisting at the scene were the Diamond Fire Company of Walnutport, Emerald Fire Company, Slatedale Fire Company, Friedens Fire Company, Germansville Fire Company, Neff’s Fire Company, Lehigh Township Fire Company and Palmerton Fire Department.
