Weatherly Hillclimb organizer working on more promotion

The Weatherly Hillclimb could attract more fans than ever before with competitors’ steep, uphill runs professionally broadcast, said the association’s president.

Weatherly Councilman Joseph Cyburt, who heads the association, told council members Monday that they are working with the Pocono Mountain Visitors Bureau and WFMZ in Allentown.

They will be filming the 1-mile course as it winds through challenging turns up the side of the mountain above the borough, he said.

“We’re going to have a big-screen TV down at the bottom, where you can watch the car go from the starting line to the finish,” Cyburt said.

“This is definitely going to bring a lot more people into town,” he said.

Cyburt talked to Mayor/Council President Paul Hadzick, Borough Manager Harold Pudliner and Deputy Borough Manager Tracy Grower after the September event last year about running a shuttle.

“I think it’s time,” Cyburt said, noting that he’d like to use the parking areas at the park, the trail and borough building and shuttle people to the event, which takes place in the area of Laurel and Hill Street.

Both Laurel and Hill streets are closed to traffic, and visitors park in the borough — many on the narrow North Street.

Cyburt said the association is talking about eliminating parking on North Street during the events planned for June 7 and 8, and Sept. 13 and 14, this year.

He wasn’t sure an emergency vehicle could get through with current parking.

Councilman Vincent Cuddeford II said that a firetruck could get through with parking on one side only, and people currently park on both sides.

Cyburt asked council to consider what changes they’d like to see, and the association would list them on its website and put up signs to let people know about changes.

The Hillclimb’s growth is a boon to the local economy, and he put together numbers from previous years. Local nonprofits raised $25,000 last year, and the Hillclimb brought in more than $78,000.

“It’s hard to believe, but we generate a lot of money in the area doing this,” Cyburt said.

He also asked about the possibility of additional lighting in the large pit area for safety at night with campers and their families, and also water service to the pavilion area.

They may also be able to charge for parking based on his discussions with the visitors’ bureau, which has more experience with manning shuttles, Cyburt said.

“They deal with this type of stuff all the time,” he said, adding that he was told people wouldn’t mind paying $5 or $10 for a safe parking spot.

Cyburt said they would like to work with the schools as well for their parking lots.
