Monroe to present hazard plan tonight
The Monroe County Office of Emergency Management and the Monroe County Planning Commission are hosting a public meeting to present the updated Draft 2025
Monroe County Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan.
The meeting will focus on risk
assessment, community outreach, and the needs of vulnerable communities in Monroe County. The
public is encouraged to attend and provide input on the plan, which aims to reduce risks from
natural and man-made hazards.
In line with the Federal Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000, every county and municipality is required
to have an updated hazard mitigation plan in order to qualify for federal disaster funding following
a declared disaster.
The hazard mitigation planning group, which includes the Monroe County Office of Emergency
Management, the County Planning Commission, municipal representatives, critical infrastructure
agencies, and local stakeholders, has identified 25 potential hazards in the county. These hazards
include natural disasters such as floods, wildfires, and severe storms, as well as human-caused
events. The planning group has updated and expanded mitigation measures to reduce the risks to
public health, safety, and property.
A key component of this update is ensuring that the needs of Monroe County’s vulnerable
communities are considered throughout the planning process. The updated hazard mitigation
strategies aim to prioritize resources and assistance to protect populations that may be at greater risk
due to factors such as age, disability, socioeconomic status, or geographic location. By addressing
these vulnerabilities, the county seeks to enhance its overall resilience and preparedness for future
hazards. This public meeting is an important opportunity for our community members to have a
voice in the plan and help shape a safer, more resilient Monroe County.
The meeting will take place at 6 tonight at Northampton Community
College - Pocono Campus, Pocono Hall, Rm 108 located at 2411 PA-715, Tannersville.
Attendees will have the opportunity to review the draft plan, ask questions, and provide
feedback.
