Panther Valley to start budget process

The Panther Valley School Board will soon be getting its first look at the proposed 2025-26 budget.

Director Anthony DeMarco on Wednesday asked Business Manager Jesse Walck about seeing early numbers for the budget.

The proposed budget is about 85% complete, Walck said, and he still needs to run some modules and obtain projections from insurance companies which don’t come in until April.

Walck also reported that they had the kickoff meeting for the intermediate school project, which will replace failing windows and doors, domestic hot water heaters, upgrade the water system and improve electrical surge protection.

The nearly $1 million project is funded through a state Public School Facility Improvement Grant. The district received $795,000, one of the highest awards among Carbon County districts.

Walck also reported that the 2023-24 audit had been completed, and he recommended repayment of interfund loans and transfers to make the financial statements more easily understandable.

The board approved the audit, the transactions and the transfer of the full balance of the capital reserve fund to the capital projects fund.

In other business, the board approved:

• The Lehigh Carbon Community College 2025-26 Operating and Capital Budget.

• A scholarship advertisement in the 2025 Carbon County Sports Hall of Fame Program.

• Writs of execution for two properties in Lansford for which $3,927.29 and $3,285.44 is owed.

• Closing the tax collector bank account at Jim Thorpe Neighborhood Bank.

• Opening bank accounts at Mauch Chunk Trust Company for tax collectors in Summit Hill, Nesquehoning and Lansford.

• A memorandum of understanding between the district and the Lehigh Valley Children’s Center Inc. for 2025-26. This is for preschool.

• The first reading of a policy on the admission of students. Robert Palazzo, director of curriculum, student and community services, said the date for kindergarten cut off is changed from Oct. 1 to Sept. 1.
