Man charged with assaulting mother with knife
A Kunkletown man has been charged with assaulting his mother with a knife.
According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by Trooper Roberto Spezza of the Pennsylvania State Police, Lehighton barracks, in the case against Raheem Qureshi:
At around 11:01 p.m. Feb. 8, Spezza and Trooper Matthew Treible were dispatched to a home in the 100 block of James Lane, Eldred Township, for a domestic incident.
Spezza spoke with the victim who said her son, Qureshi, 24, assaulted her before police arrived.
The woman said that Qureshi had been diagnosed with mental health issues and was suicidal.
She said argument began after Qureshi became irate when she asked him to clean the residence.
It was at that time that Qureshi attacked her, punching her in the right eye, slashing her arm with a kitchen knife, knocking her down and dragging her out of the residence by her ankles.
Spezza observed redness and scratch marks on the woman’s right eye, torn clothing and a fresh bloody scratch on her left arm that was caused by the serrated knife.
The woman declined medical attention as the wounds were superficial.
Spezza interviewed the victim and a man who witnessed the incident who said that Qureshi went berserk when they returned home from shopping.
The other man said he saw Qureshi punch the victim in the face.
Qureshi told police he said he was unpacking groceries when his mother lost it.
Spezza questioned Qureshi regarding the knife, to which he said his mother picked it up and further related that after the altercation he ran to a neighbor’s house.
Qureshi was charged with aggravated assault, terroristic threats, simple assault, harassment and disorderly conduct and was jailed in Monroe County Prison in lieu of $25,000 cash bail.
According to court papers, on Thursday he waived all charges at a preliminary hearing before District Judge Colleen Mancuso of Brodheadsville and the case now advances to Monroe County Court.
