Franklin Twp. grants extension for Marriott project

A proposed hotel on the property that was formerly Jimmy’s Gym in Franklin Township has been granted more time.

Supervisors in a 2-0 vote Tuesday accepted the 90-day extension in regard to the preliminary/final land development plans for Eagle Hospitality, LLC.

Last month, the Carbon County Planning Commission recommended conditional plan approved with the condition that if the comments outlined aren’t adequately mitigated before the preliminary/final plan approval, then the county’s recommendation changes to plan rejection of the project.

The plans, which were updated and resubmitted to the commission, include constructing a 17,225-square-foot, four-story, 97-room hotel that would become a TownePlace Suites by Marriott.

County planner Ivan O. Meixell Jr., said that the plans that were submitted to the commission in May were for three stories.

Meixell said that property lines and distance discrepancies that exist between the recorded map of the property and the plan are fixed.

In addition, he said an erosion and sediment pollution control plan must be provided and approved by the Carbon County Conservation District.

Also, Meixell said an approved Department of Environmental Protection NPDES permit for stormwater discharges is required.

Other items he said must be addressed are a drainage/stormwater management plan meeting the requirements of Franklin Township’s ordinances is needed; and adequate and reliable water sources need to be outlined and reviewed by Franklin Township and the township fire chief.

Interchange Investment Group LLC of Bethlehem purchased the 9-acre property at 1055 Interchange Road in 2019 for $1.1 million.

In 2020, the investor outlined its plans for constructing another hotel along that stretch of road.

There are currently two within a one-mile radius of that section that is just off the Pennsylvania Turnpike exit.
