Workshop burns in Lehigh County

Multiple fire companies from three different counties responded to a fire Monday afternoon in Washington Township.

Tim Vanblargan, assistant chief, Slatedale Fire Department, said firefighters responded at 12:30 p.m. to a fire that broke out at a workshop attached to a home at 8867 N. Loop Road.

“Upon arrival, fire was coming out of the back corner of the workshop,” Vanblargan said. “The winds were working in our favor, pushing flames away from the house; however, smoke was starting to come out of the eaves of the house.”

Vanblargan explained how firefighters proceeded to attack the fire.

“Our main goal was to save the house,” he said. “We really didn’t care about the workshop, it was pretty much do whatever we could to stop the flames from entering the roof line of the house.”

Vanblargan said there were no injuries, and that no one was in the workshop at the time of the incident. He added it was unknown if the homeowner was in the house or arriving home to find the fire that broke out in the workshop.

He said that while the workshop was a complete loss, the home only suffered minor water and smoke damage.

Vanblargan said firefighters had the fire knocked down in about under two hours, but noted there was very extensive overhaul that followed.

He said firefighters didn’t clear the scene until 9:10 p.m., and added that Yesik Trucking provided the backhoe to help them demolish the building so they could locate and take care of any hot spots.

Vanblargan said the fire remains under investigation by an assistant state fire marshal.

He said fire companies from three different counties, along with various local EMS crews responded.

“The only hazard we had to deal with in beginning was the driveway was very icy, and we had to get in contact with the township to bring us a salt truck to try to help us deal with the driveway in the beginning,” Vanblargan said. “A big thanks to Yesik Trucking for providing the backhoe to help us with the demolition of the building.”
